Frequently Asked Questions

A  VPS or Virtual Private Server  is a hosting service based on emulated server hardware. In this environment you receive a static IPv4 + /64 IPv6, together with the tools to control boot, attach ISOs and create backups. It's ready to install and configure Linux

Note this service comes without any applications, such as HTTP servers, Databases, etc. They must be installed and configured by you according to your project's needs.

VPSes are the next step from Shared Hosting accounts and it is designed for clients who are looking for:

  • more processing resources
  • controlling many more aspects of their server
  • ensuring that their data is more protected
  • configuring/installing applications as technically required without technical restrictions

All VPSes provided are based on enterprise SSD only . The flash memory allows access to data much faster than HDDs.

We are doing our best to offer the latest in performance, by upgrading to NVMe PCIe 8x and U.2 NVMe as storage devices in all our locations.

By using enterprise SSD as the storage device, we aim to provide our customers with the latest in performance and reliability as they are optimized for heavy workloads and long endurance.

A  VPS is a virtualized dedicated server , so not a bare-metal server with dedicated hardware. Instead it runs in an emulated hardware environment, with all the tools needed for managing it in isolation.

In  a dedicated server , all the hardware is dedicated to the environment being built by you and the physical isolation provides an even higher level of security, control and stability. Dedicated Servers are in general recommended for clients who need more resources than what is available for VPS clients.

VPSes are limited to a certain amount of resources that can be added. For example, if the hardware cap set by FlokiNET is 10CPU core, 10GB RAM and 240GB you will not be able to upgrade beyond that, while Dedicated Servers are only limited by the motherboard's compatibility/capability and you are able to choose a more detailed hardware configuration (e.g. HDD/SSD/NVMe, 2/4 CPU sockets, DDR3/DDR4/DDR5, GPUs, etc).

VPSes share some resources, and in theory this service can be subject to swings in resource availability. FlokiNET monitors all VPS nodes closely to ensure that these fluctuations are well within the limits and do not affect the individual performance of each VPS. On the other hand, dedicated servers do not share any resources so these fluctuations do not exist, and all hardware capability is available at all times.

Dedicated Servers also allow for options not available to VPSes:

  • Dedicated firewall
  • Up-link connections up to 100Gbps
  • Special storage options such as HW-RAID controllers and Storage Enclosures

A VPS provides a very flexible and powerful hosting tool with a dedicated private IPv4 + /64 IPv6, but it requires configuring and monitoring the Linux environment by the user.

VPS is an unmanaged service provided by FlokiNET, which means that FlokiNET has no access to or responsibility for monitoring, securing, maintaining, developing or troubleshooting.

You are responsible and the only one with access for kernel management, network configurations, upgrading the Linux distro as needed, controlling the installed repos and of course all installed applications such as Python, Go, Ruby, PHP, MySQL databases, Oracle DB, Mongo DB etc.

Shared hosting on the other hand, even with more limits, is a very simple and straightforward platform, ready to upload and deploy your compatible application, requiring far less from the user.

If the advantages of a VPS don't make much sense for you, the safer and recommended option is a Shared Hosting plan.

When you complete the purchase a VPS,  the deployment process starts immediately , and you can expect your server to be ready within a few minutes.

You will receive an email with all the necessary instructions on how to proceed. Please let us know via ticket if any issues arise, and our team will be happy to assist you and ensure that your service is up and running as expected.

Additionally, we recommend you also read the next question "What are SSH keys? Do I need them?" before purchasing your VPS.

SSH keys are a method of authentication used to identify the client and server, and to encrypt the data that is exchanged between them. The pair is generated locally on your end by using the "ssh-keygen" command on linux and an SSH client in Windows such as putty.

Your public key is added into the server while the private key is kept safe on your end. When you attempt to connect to your server, SSH uses the added public key to encrypt a message and sends it to your SSH client, which will use the private key to decrypt and authenticate/allow the connection.

SSH keys provide a much higher security standard than passwords, and are the recommend approach for authentication.

You are not required to have these keys, but during the ordering process, you will be prompted with a PUBLIC SSH key field and an operating system option. Your VPS will deployed with SSH key authentication only, so if you have not provided one, you will have to access the client area >> My services >> select your VPS >> noVNC console - there you will have access to the management console of your VPS.

There, you can login with the username and password chosen at check-out to allow password authentication. This is easily doable by simply editing /etc/ssh/sshd_config to set "PasswordAuthentication" to "yes" and run "sudo systemctl restart sshd" to complete the process.

Upgrading is easy, and usually requires a simple reboot of the VPS, and the new resources will be available immediately after the reboot.

However, when it comes to upgrading storage, partitions and filesystems on the VPS will not automatically adjust to the new storage size, so they will need to be adjusted manually. This is necessary since FlokiNET does not control or have access to your partitions or filesystems.

This process may vary depending on the operating system, we have a how-to in our knowledge base using GParted for reference.

It's important to note that, before doing any upgrade, it's always recommended to make a backup of all data.

Sure! Migration can be done in a few different waysion.

If you are migrating from Shared Hosting , we generally recommend that you install CPanel/WHM on your VPS/Dedicated Server (license not included by default). With this application running, FlokiNET's support team will be able to export your shared hosting account in its entirety and import it into your server in a matter of minutes and your website will be fully migrated and up and running immediately. Our team will assist you with every technical step along the way, even where manual intervention is required.

If you do not have CPanel running on your target server, you will need to manually create the required backup files/emails/databases/settings one by one and install the applications to work with each of these backed up files on the target server step by step - assistance with this process is not included.

Alternatively, you can choose another platform that supports migration from CPanel, such as Webuzo, Plesk, DirectAdmin, ISPmanager and Virtualmin. Please note that support for migrating to these platforms is limited.

If you are migrating from VPS/Dedicated Server  to Shared Hosting and you are using CPanel/WHM platform, FlokiNET's support team will be able to use the backup file(s) you generate from your VPS/Dedicated to your shared hosting account in its entirety and import it to your server in a matter of minutes and your website will be instantly fully migrated and running. If you are not using CPanel, files/databases/etc will need to be manually transferred and restored to the shared hosting account, assistance during this process is not included.

The alternatives listed above may allow you to migrate to a CPanel environment, but we cannot guarantee it.

VPS and Shared Hosting are unmanaged services provided by FlokiNET, which means that FlokiNET does not have access or responsibility to monitor, secure, maintain, develop or troubleshoot the service.

At the moment, we do not offer Windows-based Virtual Private Servers.

However, if you require a Windows operating system , we do offer dedicated servers that allow you to load your own Windows ISO and install it on the server. Please note that FlokiNET does not provide Windows licenses, nor is responsible for any Windows licensing procedures on these servers.

We provide a wide range of Linux distribuitions for you to run in your VPS.

These are all very versatile operating systems, compatible with tens of thousands of applications-you can install any of them, except for very few, such as virtualization applications, because you cannot do nested virtualization.

Some examples of commonly used are: Apache, Nginx, Lighttpd, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, C, C++, Java, Python, Ruby, Perl, GCC, GDB, Git, LibreOffice, OpenOffice, Zabbix, Nagios, Icinga, Prometheus.

Note that you must comply with our Acceptable Usage Policy (AUP) and Terms of Service (ToS).

Nested Virtualization is not allowed.

If you need to run virtual servers, please choose one of our Dedicated Server plans, they are all compatible with virtualization platforms.

There are several advantages of using a VPS in comparison with other environments:

  • Flexibility: Complete control over the operating system, applications, and resources of your server, allows you to configure it to meet your technical requirements. For example, if you wish to install a application that is not supported by Shared-Hosting and beyond that, have any application completely under your control for tweaking according to your application needs
  • Performance: While you will be sharing resources with other users, the virtualization environment will guarantee a much better performance, by isolating this usage per user
  • Scalability: Scale your resources on-demand, with minimal downtime. Dedicated servers, on the other hand, offer scalability by adding or removing hardware components, and this process is more complex
  • Isolation: The virtualization environment includes its own operating system, software, and resources, which are isolated from other virtual machines on the same physical server. This provides a more stable and secure environment

Additionally it's worth noting that dedicated servers offer more raw power and control over the hardware. This can be beneficial for certain types of workloads such as high-performance computing, video rendering or gaming servers.

Overall, VPS will give you a great balance of flexibility, performance, scalability, security, and cost-effectiveness, making it a popular choice for a wide range of websites and applications.

Not a lot, but some basic knowledge is required to be able to troubleshoot and configure everything in the VPS. These include:

  • Updating/patching the linux environment and installed applications
  • Modifying files according to technical requirements
  • Configuring and troubleshooting network interfaces
  • Managing repos
  • Firewall configurations/communication ports and installing/removing applications

It is very easy to find online tutorials and documentation on these topics and many others. Some clients are able to manage well even without extensive expertise, but the complexity greatly depends on the application you are running.

For those which find these hard, even with the online documentation as resource, will find Shared hosting services a more suitable place to host their services.

Note that FlokiNET provides VPS, Dedicated Servers and Shared Hosting un-managed , meaning that FlokiNET does not access or take responsability to patch, monitor, secure, maintain, develop or troubleshoot your environment.

Of course! While hosting services are not managed, our support team will be happy to assist you by advising to the best of our knowledge and guiding you when you need via ticket.

Full support for the basic functions of the VPS are included and we will act manually upon request. This includes, at no extra cost:

  • SSH access
  • network access
  • Linux installation
  • partition/filesystem troubleshooting after upgrade
  • backup recovery

Yes!

All VPS and Dedicated Server plans includes as standard one IPv4 and a /64 IPv6.

Yes we do!

Snapshot backups are performed automatically many times a week and are available for recovery and disaster recovery at the VPS control panel in the client area.

Additionally you can also create/recover from a backup when needed.

Our VPS service will limit your RAM to a slightly higher value than what you have purchased, to accomodate peaks, though this should not be considered an available resource.

Yes, sure!

IPs can be added while ordering your new VPS, where you will have the option to order up to 4 extra IPv4.

If you wish to add after ordering, or more than 4 IPv4 addresses, please contact us via ticket, we will be happy to assist.

Yes!

IPv6 is supported in all our locations.

Yes, the operating system does count as disk space usage when it comes to the total storage capacity of a server.

When choosing a VPS package, it's important to consider the amount of disk space that the OS require to ensure that there is enough remaining space for the storage of data and applications.

Additionally, when your server is running, it is highly recommended to keep an eye on the disk usage as the OS may require updates, storage logs which will increase disk space usage.

Each location and each package includes its own limits, please be sure to check the limits in the package and order more bandwidth/traffic on check-out if needed.

Yes, in the client area you will have access to noVNC console that allows you to interact with the server as if they were physically logged into the server.

This can be particularly useful for troubleshooting network issues or eventful crashes and the server is not reachable through other protocols such as SSH or other management platforms such as CPanel/WHM.

Sure! By owning a VPS, you have the ability to divide and allocate resources as you see fit, allowing you to create and manage multiple separate hosting accounts on the same server.

There are different ways you can resell webspace in your VPS, one easy and recommended way is to use a control panel, ex: cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin, and Webuzo.

It is important to notie that as a reseller you are responsible for providing customer support and ensuring that the server is well configured and secured as our VPS are not managed.

As a reseller your are also responsible for any legal requirements that may apply to your business and that your clients comply with FlokiNET's Terms of Service and Acceptable Usage policy.

We provide a wide range of Linux operating systems: Alma Linux, Alpine, CentOS, Debian, Fedora Server, Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Desktop, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, OpenSUSE, RHEL, Rocky Linux and others.

In case you wish to have a different OS, please reach out to us via ticket, our team is happy to consider adding the operating system of your choice.

Your domain must be configured using nameservers containing the DNS records that points to the IP of your VPS. There are different types of DNS records, the main type of records to use your domain with your VPS are: A (which resolves the domain to the IP for standard requests) and MX (resolving the domain to the email server of the domain, allowing e-mail delivery).

When purchasing both of these services with us, you will receive a "DNS Management account", which gives you the tools to configure these records.

If you wish to use our platform to manage your DNS records, you have to configure your domain with our nameservers:

  • ns1.flokinet.net
  • ns2.flokinet.net
  • ns3.flokinet.net
  • ns4.flokinet.net

After the domain is configured with the nameservers having the DNS records with the IP of your VPS, visitors will be able to reach your server via your domain.

We do not offer free VPSes for testing at this time. However, we do offer a range of VPS packages that are available on a monthly billing basis, at a minimum.

Since we only work with pre-paid services, you can choose a budget friendly package to test and upgrade it as needed after testing.

If after the first few days of testing you are sure you do not need a VPS, but a different service such as Shared Hosting or Dedicated Server, we will provide you a full refund as credits in our platform so you can acquire this different service. If this is the case, please reach out to our team via ticket so we can assist you further.

Additionally, you may want to use the looking glass link to test in more details from and to our network: FlokiNET-Looking.house

You will be the only one with root access.

With the highest level of access, you will have the ability to do anything, install, configure software and troubleshoot issues, without limitations within the VPS environment.

As the root user, you must take the necessary precautions to monitor, secure, maintain, develop and troubleshoot your server. This includes using strong passwords, using firewalls, keeping software up to date, and monitoring system logs to detect suspicious activity.

We do not retain any ability to access your stored data through any tool for management or monitoring. We only monitor overall resource usage.

Additionally, we do not share any information with any third parties regarding your traffic or patterns in any circumstance.

As a virtual container, VPSes may come with certain limitations when it comes to pre-boot encryption. In theory, the pre-boot key can potentially be extracted from the virtual container while it is running, allowing for data decryption. However, in practice this is impractical with our security measures, and encrypting data is always recommended.

Additionally, it may be recommend disk encryption instead , applied to partitions or folders to encrypt sensitive data is, which in theory is not vulnerable to this specific limitation in the VPS.

As a responsible webhosting company FlokiNET does not allow in any case:
  1. Malicious Activities
    • Any activity related to spam (relays, sites, links, proxy)
    • Netscan/portscan activities
    • DDoS originations of any kind
    • Malware distribution, hacking attempts (e.g., SQL injection attacks, remote code execution)
    • Operating or participating in a botnet, doorway pages, or carding activities
    • Phishing, scam or impersonation platforms for stealing information/money (e.g., credit card, password scam sites, fake cryptocurrency exchanges)
    • Impersonation platforms (e.g., eBay, PayPal, or any other known institutions)
  2. Illegal and Harmful Content
    • Hosting or sharing child pornography
    • Selling pharmaceuticals without a license
    • Sharing or distributing materials related to terrorism
    • Doxxing: revealing or sharing personal and private information without consent (privacy violation)
  3. Server Abuse
    • Chia mining on shared hosted accounts, VPS or dedicated servers
